109. Al-Kaafiroon · The Disbelievers

A repeated declaration distinguishes the messenger's worship from the worship of those addressed. Its firm closing acknowledgment of separate religious commitments presents devotion as something that cannot be combined through an exchange or compromise of objects of worship.

A note on Arabic, English and verse numbering

Tanzil’s Arabic source includes the opening basmala with the first verse of surahs other than 9. Pickthall’s numbered translation includes it at 1:1; at other surah openings it is not repeated within the numbered English verse. This display preserves both source conventions. The Arabic is not a collection of all variant readings.

Say: O disbelievers!

I worship not that which ye worship;

Nor worship ye that which I worship.

And I shall not worship that which ye worship.

Nor will ye worship that which I worship.

Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.
